Review: Kissing You is your standard "cute BoA song"... although it pales in comparison to her other "cute" material (Konoyono Shirushi, Cosmic Eyes, Nanairo no Ashita ~brand new beat~, etc etc etc). It's an okay song, but pretty bland. Unfortunately I think it tries way too hard to be cute to the point of it seeming really forced. The only part I really like about the song is the bridge; it's soft, stylistic, and the chords sound great. I think that this song would actually be nice as a b-side... but unfortunately it's the main a-side. It's not quite strong enough to pull off its a-side status. Sparkling begins as a ballad, but thankfully transitions into a strong dance-oriented pop song. It's fun and uptempo, and although the melody doesn't seem too special at first, its simplicity crescendos into the driven pre-chorus and powerful hook beautifully. This is actually one of BoA's most original songs in a while; I'm very impressed!! Joyful Smile is a plunky, feel-good pop song with a lot of potential. The opening would lead you to believe that strong percussion is soon going to take the song to the next level, but... that never happens (I think it would benefit from a percussion boost, personally). The song is simple, light, and fresh but I can't help but feel it's missing something to drive it into something wonderful. Even though this single is better than I thought it would be, it's still not quite there yet. However, it's definitely a step in the right direction (re: Sparkling). Give it a try!

Review: Call me (Appelez moi) takes a different approach than Don't Forget Me -- it's a light pop song with deep electronica influences. It's very soft and easy-going, and has an acoustic feeling to it even though it's not literally acoustic. Blaise switches between English and French, telling the story about "a guy who is trying to get a hold of a girl he knew when he was younger, but he can’t bring himself to call her, so he decides to walk to her. At every step he takes, he hesitates, and contemplates whether or not he should turn back, but he continues. When he finally arrives, he realizes that he never had the courage to talk to her before, why would he now? Ultimately it forces him to admit to himself that he never really knew her in the first place, and he continues praying for her to call him someday." [1] It's a pretty little song with a universal theme that I'm sure most of us (if not all of us) can relate to. I like the genre and language experimentation, and even though his French sounds unusual (re: accent), I admire him so much for trying. ♥ Although I prefer Don't Forget Me, this is a very nice single as well. I hope he releases more solo singles in the future!

★ Big Bang; With U

Big Bang's With U is the lead song from their upcoming second Japanese minialbum. The song is sung entirely in English. And most of it is understandable English, yayyy. XD It's a catchy song, but it's incredibly generic -- it sounds a lot like the rest of the English R&B/urban songs out right now. However, their vocals do sound smooth and the hook is pretty catchy. I have no idea if Japan will like it or not, but lets hope so! Full mini-album to be released May 28, 2008.
